It has been 5 months since my last video on my Youtube Channel, LittleGadget. I'm sad to say that, as far as the channel is concerned, I've nothing to show for that time. I streamed a number of times through Youtube Gaming online with my sister, although haven't found time in the last month. It was never my intention to let it stagnate for so long, but here we are.

What's been going on?
I do have somewhat of a reason for the lack of content. From March to May I was heavily focused on school. It was my last year of my B.Sc. and I needed to make sure I did well so I could continue onto my Masters (which I am!), and then from May until now I've been focused on my summer research position. Extra time I've had has mainly been spent relaxing and unwinding with Overwatch, or tinkering with maintaining this website and exploring the wonders of webhosting.
Plus, it hasn't helped that I'm waiting to see if I can get my Blue Yeti microphone fixed or replaced or something to finally get rid of the electrical whine it has.
But now that we're reaching the end of the summer season, I've realized that I absolutely don't want to reach September without having at least one video done and out there, especially since my August is looking to be fairly eventful. This isn't to say that I'm starting from scratch. Actually, I've had a full video written out for over a month, and the concept behind that goes back further to April. It's something that originated as a collaboration attempt with youtuber Ally Mushka, which we backed out of as it was a busy time for both of us.
I've other ideas too that I've been holding onto for a year now. Rather than holding them completely a secret, I want to share what I'm thinking here on this website, both to self-motivate myself to complete these and to share a bit of "behind-the-scenes" (if you can call this that) with any readers.
Production Plan 2016
This is going to outline my focus video ideas that I'll be tackling in the next while. I won't go into much detail for specific videos. Rather, I'll write separate posts for individual videos and will update this page to links to those. Those video-posts will be further expanded as I work on the video to become a kind of "production blog" for that video.
So here is my current Production Plan for LittleGadget for the forseeable future:
My video on Dreaming Sarah and dreaming neuroscience is by far the work I'm most proud of. Despite a cheesy intro that I instantly felt embarrassed about after uploading, this captures very well my vision for a fusion of science and video games; my two loves in life. It's definitely a concept that needs work and refinement, but going forward these are going to be my main focus. Right now I have four video ideas I plan to work on.
- Dark Souls & Social Interaction (Researched, Written, Final Draft, ready to record)
a. ...and Empathy (Researched, Script done)
b. ...and Psychopaths (Researched, Script done)
- Minecraft and Cognitive Maps (No work done)
- Braid and the Memory Palace (Written out in my head)
- Hearthsone and Delay Discounting (Researched and rough draft)
The first one up is going to be on Dark Souls, and I'm super excited about it! That's actually ready to record. As soon as my mic is ready to go I'm getting on this.
Of course there are enough of these on Youtube. That's mainly why I didn't want to bother trying something along this vein to begin with. There are enough AVGN's and Jontron's out there.
But see, I had this idea of a kind of dry-comedy review... It's hard to explain, mostly because it's not entirely formulated. It was especially inspired after seeing people like GoldVision.
I guess the best way I can describe what I'm thinking is a discussion that dips in and out of surreal in a kind of Douglas Adams Hitchhikers way. I suppose in essence Jontron (and others) all do this, but I feel like a lot of people focus on setting up jokes and comedy bits. This is something I've no experience with and I'm not good at, but I might be able to do something else funny/interesting.
Anyways, the video I have in mind is going to be about Klax, which I think has the potential to turn out really interesting. We'll see. If I can't make it work I'll scrap this idea, but I think it can go somewhere.
This I'm actually not quite sure about. In the past I tried my hand at a "quick-review" video concept (like this or this) that had an interactive menu in the form of an experience bar. I liked it because it kind of game-ified the whole thing. I worked out a lot of improvements with what I was doing (especially after the last one I did, which was in February), and I even worked out a text format so I could make written reviews in the same style (like this Overwatch review).
I actually wrote out a script to make a video out of that Overwatch review, but of course that didn't progress any further. I should really think of doing some sort of Overwatch video, both with how popular it is and how much I love it, but I don't really want to until I have something more interesting to add to the conversation.
I enjoy thinking about games in a more critical way and it'd be cool to do more of these if I have time, but I'm not sure if I should change something about the format. Or maybe just being "looser" about the format would be better. I might just forget the aim of "quick-review" and slow it down a bit, think out arguments more, etc. Take a more analytical approach too. I'll still try and keep it concise, but if I have a lot to say then it would either take longer or be split up.
Actually, my only inspiration for this right now is a Review/analysis of Final Fantasy XIII. Probably seems like a strange choice, but it's a weird game for me. I really didn't care for it up until a certain point, where I've now gone 180 and really really like the game. The trilogy as a whole really. I have a rough draft I wrote out on a train ride 2 months ago of all my thoughts I want to communicate. But I can talk about all that later.
So there are six video ideas for the foreseeable future:
1. Dark Souls
7. Final Fantasy XIII
+ maybe Overwatch
This isn't even touching other "failed" video ideas that we've tried to go through but stopped for whatever reason. I'll try and talk about them in the future for sure. Who know, it might even give me some inspiration of what to make with it!
This post will be updated periodically as future posts are made about the various projects.
